Diana McLaren is DEFECTIVE

28 June:

Side Door Theatre as a part of Wollongong Comedy Festival

Comedy

Diana McLaren is a returned local to the Wollongong comedy seen. She has been performing since 2018 and the years of honing her craft have paid off in this her latest show – Defective.

Diana’s comedy relates to delivering her life experience to the audience and it’s a dose of the personal with a teaspoon of world view. She kicks off with Start with body love and fat shaming. She continues with cleaver whit a huge amount of love and humour and a clear thread that she returns to – defective. From defective comments /opinions /situations /cars /minds /classrooms /ADHD diagnosis methods / family – definitely family all sprinkled with one liners that smash and are not gratuitous. All of it linked and flowing.

This is a well written show that is well delivered. She takes her time and brings us all on the ride with her. Sitting amongst the audience there were a lot of nods, smiles, laughs and side looks of oh yeahhhhhh. She is a truth telling comedian, open about a life with therapy, defective parents, ADHD, attraction to certain problematic people. She deals with hecklers with curiosity and humor not excluding or using cheap easy shots to put down. She is funny and is with us as audience members to all of our delight.

The Clit Conversations - This show openly discusses consent, body love, and ends with a brilliant (if too quick) piece about bisexual skill development. She had a fabulous moment with the audience around ‘the what we like in bed’ part of a date, holding the pause with a question; “What you don’t practise consent?” This is one of the few shows I’ve seen that articulates consent openly and casually as a fundamental and for that it hits on the wetness scale too. Diana performs and writes with body confidence and self-love and what is not hot about that.
